Proposal for Extension of a New Building

As the KBC Health Care Clinic is a Christian hospital and supported by the Karen people, many people relied on its health care and had great hopes for us. As more and more patients sought for health care and the clinic has proved very beneficial to the public, the leaders decided on extending the existing building and expanding its room.  Accordingly, an appeal was forwarded to the KBTS (Karen Baptist Theological Seminary) through the Care Committee for permission to expand the allotted premises. The proposed new building will have a high-standard operation theatre, together with room for (20) in-patients.

Estimate cost would be 7,500,00 (75lakhs). A committee was formed for this purpose.

  1. Visiting Friends and Churches.

In order to put up this building KBC Health Care Clinic treasurer Rev. Doh Say and Care Director Thara Christopher Lau Bah were full of enthusiasm and made arrangement to visit doctors and churches at various places. As a result we found many people and churches came to understand and appreciate better our work and programs and gave generous donations for our cause.

  1. A Big Special Donation

U Kyaw Win of May flower Bank was invited to the Health Care Clinic Family Christmas on December 15, 1997. He was accompanied by his wife Daw Khin Kyi and some of his workers. After the service, U Kyaw Win toured the clinic grounds, taking note of the work going on and the needs. Since there was not enough fund for completion of extension and renovation, he and his wife decided to help the Clinic and pledged to donate Kyat 30 lakhs (3,000,000). The donation was made on December 21, 1997. It was deposited in the Clinic’s saving accounts on December 22, 1997.

His message was based on Isaiah 54:2-3 and Hebrews 3:4 “Make the tent you live in larger: lengthen its ropes and strengthen the stakes!”  “Every house of course, is built by someone and God is the one who has built all things.” Since there was not yet enough instruments equipment for the operation theatre, they were collected and dedicated on August 15, 1998 in the presence of some Karen Baptist Convention leaders and doctors. On that day some patients underwent operation free of charge.

Repair / renovation

Working in accordance with the need of the Clinic the Health care Committee, on January 1, 1999 appointed Dr. Raymond Dee as Medical Superintendent. After assuming responsibilities he undertook various repair and renovation work for the buildings as follows:

  1. Construction of car garage and generator shed

The Medical Superintendent saw the need for construction of a ramp and repaired the steps to facilitate the coming and going of patients. Cost for this was Kyat 611,720.

  1. Renovation the old operation theatre

Occasionally there are visitors from abroad who wish to see our clinic and so there arose the need for a guest room or office.  God has done wonderful things for us and made it possible for us to meet wonderful people. On December 13-15 the big ship “M.V Doulous” docked at Yangon port. Many crew members came ashore visiting the people of Myanmar, some joining Christian groups in worship services. Mr. Peter and a group of senior as well as young people came to visit our clinic. They wanted to make a gift as a memento of the trip and we asked for help for renovation of our old operation room. They were happy to do so and as a result we were able to renovate the room and use it as office as well as guest room for special occasion. The “M.V Doulous” has sailed away from Yangon but we still see the good work done by its crew and give thanks to God for such friends.

The Leaders Continue Building up the Work

The Health Care Clinic was opened on Nov 1. 1993 by leaders of the Karen Baptist Convention namely: Rev. Dr. Clifford Kyaw Dwe (Retired General Secretary), Secretary Rev. Cooler, Associate Secretary, Head of the Clinic Rev. Thara Obrien and the leaders from the health sector who were Prof. Dr. Simon  Tha and Sister Sally. Volunteers were Dr. Irene May Sein OO, Dr. Marldo Thein and some others.

Process of expanding the work

On February 15, 1994, in-patients were admitted and an operation room was also set up in the old building. An operation were carried out by Dr. Simon Tha. In 1994, more specialists were recruited namely. Dr. Kler Ku (OG). Dr. Moo Ka Paw (OG), general surgeon Dr. Victor Natarajan, psychiatrist Dr. Wilfred and some physicians. Labour room for delivery of babies was also set up.

In 1995, Dr. Say Lwai and pediatrician Dr. Maung Maung Thein joined the clinic together with medical technologist (Laboratory) Thara Mitchell. In 1996, an ear, nose and throat specialist joined. We also obtained an ECG machine and so the work grew up. Prior to the opening of the clinic the Karen Baptist Convention (KBC) had extended a loan of   K – 12 lakhs (1,200,000) to the clinic for renovation and construction work. The loan was repaid in 1999.

In the beginning there were not enough workers. In 1994, Rev. Dr. Doh Say served as honorary treasurer while nurses Tharamu Janet and Tharamu Evelyn volunteered their services. Thara Marku also helped the clinic be keeping accounts. In 1995, Dr. Gabriel, Dr Scarlet, nurses Tharamu Paw Lar and Tharamu Say Lar joined. In 1996, Dr. Than Naing, Matron Josephine and Thara Dawn joined the clinic facilitating work in nursing and running of machines.  Gradually more nurses, midwives and nurse aids came to offer their services.

In 1998, P’doh Yo Shu joined as an accountant and he made arrangement for some young people to serve as counter clerks. In this year Dr. Bonney Aye Maung also joined the clinic as medical officer. In 1999, with appointment of Dr. Raymond Dee as medical superintendent, work of the clinic kept growing.

In 2004, while Dr. Clifford Chain was serving as a medical superintendent, Naw Hsar Kee Lar was appointed as Admin Officer and starting from that time, the office team and the finance team worked together for the improvement of the clinic. As the clinic only had a small tube well that was not enough for the patients, the team tried their best for getting a new tube well. By the grace of God, the clinic got a new tube well that produced plenty and enough water, by the support of Catherine Allen and her team (Global Women). At the same time, the clinic also got a new Ultrasound donated by FOB (Friends of Burma).

In 2005, as the operation table did not work well, there were difficulties in operating patients. By the support of FOB the clinic received new instruments for operation theater (OT).

In early 2006 Dr Keh Doh Htoo joined the clinic to support the Medical Officer team. In mid-2006, the ceiling light of the OT became worse and the surgeons had to operate patients difficultly. It’s not easy for the clinic to buy it but God opened way and showered blessing by the support of the First Baptist Church (USA). And we can use the ceiling light till 2018.

In 2007, the clinic became so crowded with the patients that the CAC (Clinic Advisory Committee) started thinking about building a new three storied building. After getting the permission from KBC’s EC to rebuild it, Dr Gabriel (Assistant Medical Superintendent), Thramu Magnolia (Director of the Care and Counseling Department) together with Thramu Hsar Kee Lar tried their best to get the permission for the new building. In the meantime, FOB Board Members (Neil & Diana, Tansy Kadoe, David Horton, Ko Philip & Ma Nwe) visited the clinic and the FOB’s board decided to raise fund for the new building.

And on 2nd May 2008, the Nargis Cyclone hit Myanmar and it also effected the clinic. Therefore caring of the patients for their safety and also renovation of the clinic had to be done immediately. Then 3rd day after the Nargis Cyclone, KBC clinic started relief response and also health care activities for the Nargis effected communities. By the Clinic Management Team’s decision, the medical team was divided to 3 groups (Group 1 to Pathein Myaung Mya Association, Group 2 to Bogalay (Yagon Association) and Group 3 settled in Yagon and provided medical care for the patients affected by the cyclone. Since then, KBC clinic has been able to run mobile medical care activities for the communities. After Nargis Cyclone, as a post Nargis response, KBC hospital could run a mobile clinic in Bogalay for two years by the support of FOM( Friends of Myanmar)

In 2009, God showed a tremendous blessing for the clinic. Management team of the clinic got chances to meet with the Yangon City Mayor and established a good relationship. Firstly, the Management team of KBC clinic was able to rebuild Ward A into a 3-storyed building. Then the Mayor planned to visit the clinic and also to other churches. After Mayor’s visiting, the clinic got permission to build a new building and dedication for the new building was taken place on 10th October 2009.

At that time there were discrepancies between the proposal and real circumstances, but God told us definitely that His will is higher than the sky and is beyond ours. We were grateful to Friends of Myanmar and those who extended their love, prayer, idea, time and contribution in their own ways.  And the total expenses cost for three storied building construction was 123,567,338 Kyat.

In 2010, the clinic was upgraded to 50 bedded hospital after fulfilling the requirements of Ministry of Health (MOH). And it became a milestone for the Karen Baptist Convention as KBC hospital is the first faith based hospital in Myanmar. And again in 2010, the hospital could build a new maternity ward (Ward D) and dedicated it on 10th October 2010.

In 2011, Dr Clifford Chain retired and Dr Gabriel became a Medical Superintendent (MS). The MS tried his best for fulfilling the requirements for establishing a 50 bedded hospital.

In 2012, Dr. G Aye Wai was appointed as a senior medical superintendent. As an experienced MS, he did the renovation for the Ward C building, laundry section, Labor Room upward extension and also for staff quarter. On behalf of the KBC Hospital, he also signed an agreement with the “IRIS DIALYSIS Center” for the betterment of patients with renal failure. He also signed an agreement with the “Global Image Care Group” for the cleft palate and gall stone patients and was able to operate (265) patients.

In addition, he could establish eye department for the KBC hospital. We could also say that he tried his best not only for the betterment of the hospital but also for staff.

In 2013, the KBC hospital celebrated the 20th Thanksgiving Worship Service at the KBC Hospital.

In 2014, the KBC hospital could submit the proposal for the installation of the elevator. By the support of the Mountain Brook Baptist Church, the KBC hospital bought a new elevator. Then by the support of local well-wishers, the KBC Hospital could install the new elevator. Moreover on 29th June 2014, the KBC hospital could set up the foundation for the patient’s attendant house and staff hostel.

On 2nd March, 2015, the hospital could hold the dedication worship service for the elevator. Although the KBC hospital had many difficulties, with the blessing of God, the hospital could build the patient’s attendant house and staff hostel and dedicated it on 21st May 2015. And we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to God, pastors and members of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, World Wide Gift Foundation, Friends of Burma (FOB), Well-wishers and all of the organization leaders for all the contribution they had made.

In 2016, Dr G Aye Wai retired as Medical Superintendent and Dr. Maureen was appointed as  Medical Superintendent. During 2016, by the leading of the Care and Counseling Department, KBC hospital could develop the KBC hospital’s manual, guidelines, rules and regulations and policies that needed for the hospital. By the blessing of God, the hospital could buy and install a new digital X-ray Machine for the hospital.

In 2017, the hospital could establish integrated hospital software especially for the pharmacy, inpatient billing system and medical store.

In 2018, CCTV was installed for the safety and security of the hospital. In

Addition by the support of Dr. Marldo Thein and friends, the hospital could install a new OGD scope.
